Prairie Song Kennels is located approximately 10 km west of the resort town of Sylvan Lake, Alberta. We live on 8 quiet acres of land, which is home to our Leos. We are still in the construction stage on our acreage but the design is all for the Leos, with the entire acreage being fenced this coming summer. There are three beautiful Leo girls, the cutest young male puppy and two cats that are all raised in the home and are an integral part of our family.
We are adamant about our breeding program; the health and mental & physical soundness of our litters and our dogs is our number one priority. All of our Leonbergers will have attained their Canadian Championship before they will be considered to be bred. They will also have passed all their health testing (OFA hips, elbows & thyroid, Cerf certification) and have a good solid temperment. We also want anyone interested in our puppies to understand the commitment that these dogs must have from potential owners in order to live a long & happy life. The Leonberger is a very intellgent animal that needs early and loving training to be a successful part of their new families. Potential owners must understand these are large dogs that need to be trained for acceptable behaviour in your home - they do not train themselves.
Leonbergers are very affectionate and loving with their "people". They thrive with being around the family all the time. They are not a dog to be left outside by themselves for extended periods of time. Leos are very intelligent and learn very fast.
We purchased our first Leonberger in April 2004 from Sheila & Pierre Lemaitre of Lemaitre Kennels in Abbotsford. Keeva was a beautiful, large female with a wonderful personality. Unfortunately, due to an extremely freak accident, when she was 11 months old she was playing in the snow and aspirated & choked on a piece of ice. Keeva was our first experience with the Leonberger breed and from this came a love of this majestic breed.
Over the past four years we have acquired 3 more females (Saorla was #1 Leonberger in Canada for 2006!) and one male puppy who arrived from Germany in January 2008, which are everything we had hoped for. These leos are first and foremost companion dogs for our family. We show them for fun (although a group placement would make us jump for joy!) and so that people can see what a fantastic family oriented breed of dog they are. We are currently looking for a forever home for Cassy as she needs a one dog family.
In my effort to learn more and have the best knowledge about this breed and dogs in general, I am a member of the Leonberger Club of America (LCA), the Canadian Kennel Club and the Red Deer Kennel Club and have been to many seminars. Some of those seminars are Pat Hastings - Puppy Puzzle, Myra Savant-Harris - Canine Reproduction & Carmen Battaglia - Breeding Better Dogs. I am going to Dr Robert Hutchinson in the fall and my goal for next year is to make it on the K9 College Cruise going to seminars and touring the Western Caribbean.
Feel free to email or call with any questions you may have about this breed.
